This past weekend we escaped to beautiful Lake Tahoe. We had been wanting to plan a trip back to Lake Tahoe for awhile now, but kept having to postpone it. Thankfully we were able to finally make it happen. It turned out to be one of our best trips this year! Matthew and I haven’t visited Lake Tahoe since 2018 and this was the first trip we’ve taken both the kids. We left mid-afternoon Friday and arrived in South Lake Tahoe just after 5pm. We checked into our hotel and decided to go explore since the night was still young! We enjoyed walking around Heavenly Village before getting dinner. Then we decided to head back to our hotel to relax before waking up the next day to go explore more of Lake Tahoe. It was the perfect start to our weekend getaway.

Lake Tahoe can be a great solo trip, romantic couples getaway, or a fun family vacation. There is a little bit of everything for everyone. We have visited both in the winter and spring. March through May happen to be the best months to visit if you’re looking for less crowds. Summer months are warmer and have more things to down at the lake, but tend to be a lot busier. No matter when you visit, Lake Tahoe is absolutely beautiful. We had a great weekend exploring Lake Tahoe as a family. Here’s our Lake Tahoe travel guide…

Where to stay
We looked at a lot of different hotels and vacation properties when we began planning our trip, but the Station House Inn really stood out for our family.

The Station House Inn is a beautiful hotel nestled just a short walk away from the Lake Tahoe shoreline and has breathtaking views of the mountains. Station House Inn offers 96 full-service rooms that range from comfy doubles to spacious, cozy suites. We stayed in the Jasper Suite which was both family friendly and dog friendly! The hotel offers popcorn and a movie in the main lobby every Friday night along with games and books to sit back and relax with every day of the week. After a long day exploring the lake, our family enjoyed sitting by the fire, taking in the serene views, and roasting complimentary s’mores. There’s a seasonal pool as well as the Toulouse Restaurant. Located conveniently within walking distance of ski resorts, private beach, shops, restaurants, and casinos, the Station House Inn is the perfect basecamp to get out and explore all that Lake Tahoe has to offer while also being the perfect hotel to kick back and relax. Book your stay here.

Our stay was hosted by Station House Inn but all opinions are my own.
Where to eat
We are huge breakfast people so of course we had to give The Getaway Cafe a try. This cafe is both a local and tourist favorite. I recommend trying their French toast or breakfast burritos. The sunrise mimosas are great too! The kids ordered Mickey Mouse pancakes which they loved. The staff was friendly and they also offer patio seating if you have a furry friend. Make sure to get there early as it gets busy fast!

Another must try spot when in Lake Tahoe is Aloha Ice Cream. They specialize is rolled ice cream as well as craft ice cream. The staff is super friendly and helped us pick out some delicious flavors. They also offer dairy free options. I highly recommend their coconut strawberry cheesecake ice cream. Delicious!

For dinner, Base Camp Pizza is both delicious and family friendly. I recommend getting there before the dinner rush because tables fill up fast. It’s totally worth the wait though!
What to do
Heavenly Village shops are fun to explore and shop. The Gondola was closed, but our kids had a blast doing the bunji trampoline. Our kids had never tried soda before so for fun we visited Rocket Fizz and let them each pick a special soda to try for the first time. There are also a lot of great restaurants in the area if you are looking for a bite to eat. We had our kids with us so we didn’t go into the casinos, but you can also visit one of the casinos if you are feeling lucky.

Where to go
There are a lot of beaches located all around Lake Tahoe, but my personal favorite is Sand Harbor. There is a $15 entrance fee. It’s totally worth it! The beach is absolutely beautiful with clean sand and bright blue water that is safer than other beaches I’ve visited on the lake. There are also bathrooms and fun trails you can explore some of the most beautiful areas around. If you are planning on visiting during the summer, I recommend getting there before 9am to get a decent spot as it gets busy fast!

We did a quick weekend trip and it’s still a little chilly outside during the day, but if you’re visiting during the summer I recommend booking a lake cruise or renting a clear kayak or paddle board. Lake Tahoe is an absolutely must visit destination with tons of fun activities and beautiful hikes for beginners to avid outdoorsman’s.
