Family travel looks a little different as our kids get older. Schedules get busier, everyone has their own opinions, and it can feel like a lot to coordinate. But the reward of stepping away together, exploring somewhere new, and making memory-making moments is always worth it.
We’ve been really intentional about how we plan trips lately, especially with affordability and ease in mind. And since we’re headed to Hawaii next month, I wanted to share exactly how we planned this trip and the things that helped us save money without sacrificing the experience.

Booking Flights at the Right Time
One of the biggest wins for us this trip was how we booked our flights. We started watching prices early, and we ended up booking our tickets right around six weeks before our travel dates. That timing truly made a difference.
Something else that helped: looking at flights on Mondays and Tuesdays. Prices tend to dip a bit earlier in the week, and while it’s not a guarantee every single time, it definitely paid off for us. We were able to get our flights for about one-third of what we typically see when looking for Hawaii travel. It felt like a huge win and really took some pressure off the rest of the planning process.
Choosing a Condo Instead of a Hotel
For this trip, we knew we wanted a space that felt comfortable and convenient, especially with kids. Instead of a traditional hotel room, we looked for condo rentals on Airbnb. Not only did we find a beautiful condo for less than what many hotels were charging, but we also now have:
• A full kitchen for breakfasts, snacks, and easy meals
• Separate sleeping areas for all of us
• Room to unwind after long beach days
Having that extra space makes such a difference on family trips. Mornings are slower and easier, meals are simpler and more affordable, and everyone has room to relax.

Making Travel With Kids Less Stressful
Over the years, we’ve learned a few things that help keep travel smoother:
Let the kids be part of the planning. Choosing one activity or meal spot each makes them feel included and excited. Build in downtime. Not every moment needs to be planned. Slow mornings, beach afternoons, or time at the pool can be just as memorable as big excursions. Pack with intention. We bring items that make life easier: reusable water bottles, light layers, tablet downloads, and a small first-aid kit. Simple, but it saves a lot of unexpected stress.
What Matters Most
At the end of the day, family travel is less about where you go and more about the time you get together. Some of the best moments aren’t fancy or scheduled. They’re laughing in the car, chasing waves on the beach, grabbing shaved ice in the sun, or watching the kids stay up a little too late because vacation magic is real.
We’re so excited for this trip, not just because it’s Hawaii, but because it’s time together in the middle of full calendars and growing-up-way-too-fast seasons.
If you’re planning a family trip soon and want tips on finding deals, packing smart, or choosing the right stay, I’m always happy to share more. And once we’re back, I’ll definitely be sharing our favorite spots and what worked well for traveling with kids.
Here’s to adventure, connection, and a little sunshine.

Xoxo
