Supporting Teens in the Digital World: Key Takeaways from the Meta Screen Smart Event

A couple of weeks ago, I had the privilege of being invited to attend the Meta Screen Smart event, and as a mom to an almost tween, it was an incredibly valuable experience. The event brought together experts, parents, and creators to discuss one of the most important topics of our time—how to support kids as they navigate the digital world.

We heard from an expert panel that included Dr. Aliza Pressman, a developmental psychologist, and Nicole Lopez, the Global Director of Youth Safety Policy at Meta. Their insights were not only informative but also reassuring for parents like me who are starting to think more seriously about our kids’ online safety.

One of the most impactful takeaways was learning about Instagram’s new Teen Accounts and the tools available through the Meta Family Center. While my kids aren’t quite ready for social media just yet, it was reassuring to hear how Instagram is prioritizing safety for teens, especially those under 16. Teen Accounts are automatically set to limit who can contact your child, filter out harmful content, and give parents greater control over their teen’s online experience. These measures are designed to keep teens safe while allowing them to explore social media in a healthier, more mindful way.

The Meta Family Center also offers a wealth of expert-backed resources for both parents and teens. It’s a fantastic tool to help families navigate the complexities of social media, offering guidance on everything from digital wellbeing to fostering healthy communication around online activities.

Beyond the expert discussions, I had the chance to connect with so many inspiring creators throughout the day. It was such a joy to meet new faces, reconnect with familiar ones, and share ideas with others who are equally passionate about supporting kids and families in the digital age. These connections truly made the event special.

A big thank you to Instagram for hosting this important conversation on teen wellbeing online. If you’re a parent wondering how to navigate your child’s digital journey, I highly recommend checking out the tools and resources available through the Meta Family Center.
